At a pivotal moment for American hemp farmers, bipartisan leadership in Congress is stepping up.
Representatives Jim Baird (R-IN) and Angie Craig (D-MN) have introduced critical legislation aimed at protecting the 2026 hemp planting season, offering much-needed clarity to farmers who are only weeks away from making planting decisions. In support of this effort, members of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable—alongside other national industry associations—are on Capitol Hill today urging Congress to act.
Why This Matters Right Now
Hemp farmers across the country are facing significant uncertainty. Without clear guidance from Congress, growers are forced to make high-risk, irreversible decisions with limited information. That uncertainty doesn’t stop at the farm gate—it threatens the entire hemp supply chain.
Processors, manufacturers, retailers, and small businesses nationwide could face serious disruptions if planting decisions are delayed or abandoned altogether.
That’s why the introduction of the Hemp Planting Predictability Act (H.R. 7024) is such an important and timely development.
What the Hemp Planting Predictability Act Does
Sponsored by Rep. Baird, this bipartisan House bill would provide a two-year extension of the current federal hemp framework. This extension gives lawmakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders the time needed to finalize responsible, science-based hemp regulations—without forcing farmers to operate in a regulatory fog.
Importantly, hemp farmers and businesses are not asking Congress to avoid regulation. They are simply asking for time—time to ensure that the future of legal hemp is decided by lawmakers and sound policy, not by uncertainty and guesswork.
Strong Voices on Capitol Hill
Representative James Comer (R-KY) has also emerged as a leading advocate for hemp farmers. In a recent floor speech, Congressman Comer made a compelling case for protecting growers and urged his colleagues to support legislative action. His leadership underscores the growing bipartisan recognition that farmers deserve predictability and fairness.
The Moment to Act Is Now
While there are strong champions fighting for hemp on Capitol Hill, they cannot succeed alone. This is a decisive moment for the hemp industry to rally behind them and encourage broader congressional support for this bipartisan solution.
